Oh My Naze! Weekly news roundup
A bit of a mixed bag this week, from window art, to ghost trains, plus local events.
Window art
We finally got our logo added this week to the window of our popup shop inside the lovely Mike and Gail’s CNG Antiques and Collectables at 25 Old Pier Street, Walton. There you can find a small selection of some of our most popular products (unique, local-inspired gifts and souvenirs).
In case you didn’t already know, our logo is a nod to the traditional neon signs you used to see all over the arcades and seafront businesses, and our mascot is based on one of the famous faces that graced the 4 sets of double doors that the beautiful Supercar carriages crashed through, on the old Roller Ghoster ghost train that sat on the Pier since the 60s and was recently removed and sold to Barry Island.
The ‘Roller Ghoster’ itself has had a few makeovers in its time, in the 60s it was simply the ‘Ghost Train’, then the ‘Roller Ghoster’ (I’ve also heard the names ‘Killer Coaster’ and ‘Twisted House’ mentioned, but do not remember the latter one).
Its facade underwent a bit of a renovation in 2005 - new themed cars, plus boxing in the balconies and the big drop, but keeping the existing track, and it spent its last years as the ‘Spooky Goldmine’.
We sell a range of Spooky Goldmine and Roller Ghoster products in our Pier Collection plus other classic pier ride products. Everything from fridge magnets and badges (available in sets or as singles), mugs, coasters, bags, t shirts and more.
Our pop-up shop @ CNG Antiques and Collectables
Speaking of CNG Antiques and Collectables, I love having a browse round there every time I pop in to restock, or to bring in the orders for collection, and almost always end up buying something I can’t leave the store without! It’s that kind of shop!
The shop actually has a fascinating history of its own, it’s been an art studio, a wool shop, a craft shop and even a butchers in its time, along with other things.
Tucked in-between Freddie’s of Pinewood’s retro clothing factory (previously The Round Tables restaurant - and joke shop), and Frinton and Walton Taxis (which Vic still calls DanCabs! One of its former names); the shop packs a lot of different collections into it’s compact space. You can find anything from: Egyptology, Militaria, Numismatics (coin/banknotes), Music memorabilia, books and all sorts.
